Immigration is a fraught issue, and in recent years dozens of groups have sprung up to advocate for one position or the other, to lobby Congress, to fund candidates, or to fight it out in the courts. With all the vague or patriotic-sounding names, it can get pretty confusing. You might see spokespeople from these organizations quoted as experts in news articles, but sometimes reporters fail to identify a group’s position. This (sort of) weekly feature will help you become a savvier consumer of immigration news.

This week’s organization, ALIPAC, is a small but feisty force against illegal immigration.

Name: Americans for Legal Immigration Political Action Committee, or ALIPAC. It is definitely not to be confused with alipac.net, or American-Latino Immigrants Proudly Assisting the Community, a pro-immigration website with the motto, “No one is illegal.”

Type: 527 group, founded in 2004. ALIPAC is registered with the FEC as a political action committee, meaning it works to influence elections.

Stance: Very strongly opposed to illegal immigrants, earning the admiration of other illegal immigration activists.

Activities: ALIPAC is based in North Carolina, but its activities are national in scope. This election cycle, it is putting money into an ad campaign against Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-S.C.), who earned ALIPAC’s ire by speaking before the National Council of La Raza. It is endorsing Graham’s opponent, Bob Conley, a conservative Democrat. ALIPAC also organizes boycotts of companies that it judges to be soft on illegal immigration, like Bank of America and the Absolut Vodka.

Funding: Small private donations, limited by law to $5,000 or less. ALIPAC’s profile is growing, but it is not nearly as well-funded as FAIR. So far it has spent $200,000 on this election cycle.

Major Players: William Gheen, a former legislative aid to a Republican state senator in North Carolina, founded ALIPAC in 2004 to oppose a bill that would have allowed any student who had attended North Carolina high schools for four years to pay in-state college tuition. The bill, Gheen said, would help illegal immigrants. With Gheen’s efforts, it didn’t pass.

Controversy: Like most groups they oppose illegal immigration, ALIPAC has been accused of racism by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Gheen is guilty of baiting this charge with spurious claims, like that illegal immigrants spread disease and crime.
