Weekly Immigration News Round-Up, 11/30

The FBI says hate crimes against Latinos are increasing Hate groups like the Ku Klux Klan are increasingly targeting immigrants, hoping to widen their own appeal by cashing in on anti-immigrant sentiments. The economic downturn may also be leading to the scapegoating of immigrants.
An ICE agent was indicted for bribery and other charges. Authorities in Florida say Pedro Cintron participated in a human smuggling ring.
The Christian Science Monitor wonders if a growing Latino population will turn Texas into a Democratic state. Major cities like Houston and Dallas are already in Democrats’ hands, largely because of an increase in Latino voters.
Rep. Paul Kanjorski (D-Pa.), who narrowly won reelection, apparently paid a cameraman to follow Hazleton mayor Lou Barletta around, pretending to be a supporter. Perhaps Kanjorski was hoping for a “macaca moment” from the man who prides himself on being tough on illegal immigrants.
Increasing enforcement along the border in Arizona is leading illegal immigrants to jump the fence in California instead.

From a humanitarian perspective, our fellow human beings, who migrate to support their families, continue to suffer at the hands of immigration policies that separate them from family members and drive them into remote parts of the American desert, sometimes to their deaths. This suffering should not continue.

Now is the time to address this pressing humanitarian issue which affects so many lives and undermines basic human dignity. Our society should no longer tolerate a status quo that perpetuates a permanent underclass of persons and benefits from their labor without offering them legal protections.

If the current administration would handle the immigration problem instead of using only a lot of words this would not be an issue.

Is this time of great economic distress really the right time to argue for greater immigration? You want to bring more people in? asks one incredulous GOP aide on Capitol Hill. That was a hard case to make when unemployment was 4 percent, much less when it's almost 10 percent.

What's new in that? Smuggling will always occur as long as we have a money driven capitalistic economy. Is as simple as that. Capitalism has flaws, many flaws.
