- North Carolina Senate: Once comfortable Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R) is fighting for her political life against Democrat Kay Hagan, whom most polls show is ahead. North Carolina has seen an influx on immigrants since Dole was last up for reelection. If Hagan wins by a narrow margin, they will have made a difference.
- Arizona State Senate, District 18: State. Rep. Russell Pearce (R), one of Arizona’s feistiest anti-immigration crusaders, is likely to beat Judah Nativio (D) in this mostly Republican senate district. Look for Pearce to continue his anti-immigration efforts on a slightly larger stage.
- Arizona Proposition 202: This initiative would prevent anonymous complaints about businesses hiring illegal immigrants. Businesses back it, while immigration hardliners oppose it.
-
Oregon Ballot Measure 58: This initiative would limit the number of years students can spend in English as a Second Language classes. All of Oregon’s major newspapers have endorsed a no vote, including The Oregonian.
-
Missouri Constitutional Amendment 1: This initiative would make English the official language of Missouri. Largely ceremonial, it expected to pass easily.
