In what is billed as the most comprehensive survey of Asian voters ever conducted, researchers have found that more than a third of likely Asian voters were still undecided as of late September, along with 41 percent who are planning to vote for Obama and 24 percent supporting McCain. Only 8 percent of the general electorate is still undecided.
The poll broke down the Asian vote into Japanese, Indians, Koreans, Filipinos, Vietnamese, and Chinese. Sixty-five percent of Asian citizens are likely voters, with Japanese-Americans the most likely to vote and Chinese the least likely.
About a third of Asians identify as Democrats, 14 percent as Republicans, 19 percent as independent and a third as non-partisan. Chinese, Filipinos, Indians, Japanese and Koreans are more Democratic, while Vietnamese tend to be Republicans.
After Latinos, Asian-Americans are the fastest-growing demographic. They could play an important role in two swing states, Virginia and Nevada.
UC Berkeley, UC Riverside, Rutgers, and the University of Southern California conducted the poll of 4,000 likely voters. The rest of the data is here.
