- More than 50 people were arrested by ICE during a raid at a Southern California bakery. Authorities are saying that company supervisors extorted money from the undocumented workers in return for guaranteeing them jobs.
- Sixty-five people were arrested in an immigration raid on a candle-making plant in Arizona, carried out by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
- A federal judge blocked the latest attempt at a rental ban for illegal immigrants in Farmers Branch, Tex.
- Executives at Agriprocessors, the Iowa meat-packing plant raided by immigration authorities in May, are facing charges of child labor stemming from that raid. The five officials are charged with 9,311 violations.
- The American and Cuban governments are arguing over the distribution of relief funds after Hurricanes Gustav and Ike, and Florida Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart and his opponent in this year’s election are using the debate to attack one another. The Miami Herald calls this one a “nasty” congressional race.
