Dear Marie,
How fitting to read this article about your fidelity to a call to stand with the people of Appalachia. The 2 or 3 times I had the joy of being with you, speaking, listening and praying with you are treasured memories. I keep in touch with your wonderful work through our common friend, LaDoris Payne. Be assured of my prayers that God will bless all your efforts to show respect for the world and its people, especially the marginalized and forgotten. I'm very proud of you.

Love, Sr. Mary Jude, OSU

I have worked with Marie Cirillo since the 70's. She is an unbelievable leader committed to community development and saving Appalachia for the people who live there now and those who were forced to leave. She has stood up to big business, absentee land lords, coal companies. She has organized the people of Roses Creek to buy land collectively---even a mountain. She joined in the national effort to promote land trusts and has gone as far a Siberia to bring the message. She served on the US delegation to the UNHABITAT conference to promote community driven, people centered practices on land reform. She has added environmental sustainability to her effort to keep and claim the land. She has stood up against the coal companies who are destroying the earth and polluting the air. Much of what she and the community leaders she is working with have said is now being being finally realized by the policy makers of today tackling global warming etc.
Most importantly she not only understands the role of class but that of gender or women's empowerment in her organizing strategies. She has been a key leader in the development of the National Congress of Neighborhood Women and founded its 11 year Institute on Women and Community Development and now is leading its work on the development of community Living Learning Centers--Appalachia, St. Louis, and Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY.

I met Marie almost 10 years ago through a friend who had also migrated from FL. Immediately, I knew Marie was one of those one-of-a-kind people whom you would never meet again in your lifetime. She epitomizes the word "commitment"!
God bless her heart and all whom she works with and for.
